The construction of the Children’s Hospital, launched in spring 2019, is nearing completion. Tailored to meet the needs of children, adolescents, and families, the hospital is scheduled to open in spring 2025.
The Children’s Hospital is ideally situated at the heart of the hospital campus, between the main entrance plaza of the Main Hospital Building and the Maternity Ward, directly above the CHUV M2 metro station. This central location provides direct access to both the Maternity Ward and the technical facilities of the Main Hospital Building.
Currently, pediatric services are split between the Children’s Hospital in Montétan and the Bugnon hospital campus. With the opening of this new facility, most pediatric services—including inpatient care, general and specialized consultations, pediatric emergency services, radiology, and surgical suites—will be relocated to the new hospital.
All activities currently housed at the Children’s Hospital in Montétan will move to this new site.
The new building will enable optimal care delivery without the need for patient transfers across the city. By bringing together all pediatric medical and surgical expertise under one roof, the Children’s Hospital will provide a more functional, modern, and welcoming environment, fully equipped to meet the current and future needs of pediatric care.
This consolidation will also create new synergies with adult specialties, offer access to state-of-the-art technical facilities, and free up space for adult care, ultimately helping to reduce congestion at the CHUV.
The relocation is scheduled over a two-week period, with patient transfers taking place over 3 to 4 days. Exact moving dates will be announced closer to the time.
An information campaign will be launched to provide all necessary details to patients, their families, the public, and healthcare professionals.
Emergency Services
The pediatric medical and surgical emergency department will be open 24/7, serving children and adolescents from 0 to 18 years old. Both pedestrian and ambulance access will be at ground level from Avenue Pierre-Decker, next to the Maternity Ward.
Please note: The HEL emergency department will close upon the opening of the Children’s Hospital.
Inpatient Units
The inpatient units, with a capacity of up to 100 patients, will be located on the upper floors (Levels 03, 04, and 05).
Levels 04 and 05 will accommodate general medical-surgical inpatient services, while oncology-hematology patients will be placed on Level 03 in a dedicated area that integrates both inpatient and outpatient care.
Intermediate Care will be located on Level 02.
Ambulatory Care
The ambulatory care sector, organized by specialty, will be located on Levels 0 and -1. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy services will be on Level 03, oncology-hematology on Level 03, and cardiology on Level 02.
Pediatric and Surgical Day Hospitals
The Pediatric Day Hospital will be located on Level 0, and the Surgical Day Hospital on Level -1. These facilities offer daytime care for in-depth diagnostics, surgical procedures, and dialysis treatments.
Operating Suite and Recovery Room
A surgical suite with five operating rooms will be in use during the day. At night and on weekends, emergency surgeries will be conducted in the Main Hospital Building’s operating suite.
Radiology
Level 01 will house a radiology department dedicated specifically to pediatrics, equipped with an MRI scanner, radiology rooms, and imaging suites.
Under the direction of the Montétan Foundation for Children and Adolescents, which owns the Montétan site, the current building will be demolished to make way for the “Montétan Center for Children and Adolescents,” expected to open by 2028.
