Dr Jeroen Geurts est responsable de recherche translationnelle au Laboratoire du service de Rhumatologie. D’origine néerlandaise, il a effectué des études de biochimie et obtenu le doctorat en rhumatologie expérimentale en 2010 à l’Université Radboud de Nimègue aux Pays-Bas.

Dr Geurts se rend ensuite à l’Université de Bâle en Suisse pour réaliser un post-doc avant de créer le Laboratoire de recherche sur l’arthrose avec le Pr Hügle au Département d’orthopédie. Entre 2012-2019, il a mené des recherches translationnelles sur le rôle de l’os et sa moelle osseuse sous-chondrales dans l’arthrose du genou, de la cheville et de la colonne vertébrale. Depuis 2019, il est privat-docent et maître d’enseignement et de recherche de la Faculté de médecine de Bâle.

Recruté au sein du Service de Rhumatologie au CHUV en 2019, il poursuit désormais la recherche translationnelle sur le rôle du métabolisme dans le contexte de l’arthrose de la hanche, de la main et du genou. Dans ce but, il a engagé plusieurs collaborations avec les orthopédistes et chercheurs de Swiss BioMotion lab au Département de l’appareil locomoteur ainsi que des groupes de recherche à l’UNIL et l’EPFL.

Il a été président des Jeunes Chercheurs de l’Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) en 2016 et est actuellement le coprésident des Jeunes Chercheurs de l’European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS). Dr Jeroen Geurts a été élu membre académique de l’European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) en 2021, et représente les chercheurs prometteurs dans le domaine des maladies musculo-squelettiques.   

Il a gagné plusieurs prix scientifiques de sociétés professionnelles, dont le prix de thèse de la Netherlands Society for Gene and Cell Therapy et le prix Georg-Schmorl pour la recherche fondamentale de la Société Allemande du Rachis (DWG).

Jeroen Geurts PhD is a principal investigator for translational research at the Laboratory of Rheumatology. He obtained his MSc in biochemistry and PhD in experimental rheumatology at the Radboud University Nijmegen (NL).

Dr Geurts pursued a post-doctoral study at the University Hospital of Basel (CH) before establishing the Osteoarthritis Research Laboratory with Prof. Hügle at the Orthopaedic Department. Between 2012-2019 he conducted translational research on the role of subchondral bone and marrow adipose tissue in osteoarthritis of the knee, ankle and spine. In 2019, he obtained his habilitation in experimental medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel.

He joined the Lausanne University Hospital in 2019 where his research activities shifted to the role of metabolism in osteoarthritis of the hip, knee and hand. To this end he has established several collaborations with orthopaedic surgeons and scientist of the Swiss BioMotion lab at the Department of Musculoskeletal Medicine, as well as research groups at the University of Lausanne and Technical University of Lausanne (EPFL).

Dr Geurts is the past chair of the Young Investigator committee of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) and current co-chair of the Young Investigators of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS). He has been elected as academy member of the European Calcified Tissue Society in 2021, which represent the future leaders in the field of musculoskeletal research.   

His work has been awarded with several scientific prizes, including best thesis award from the Netherlands Society for Gene and Cell Therapy and the Georg-Schmorl prize for basic science from the German Spine Society (DWG).
