Alessandro Aliotta graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) in 2016 as an Engineer in Life Sciences and Technologies (MSc), specializing in Molecular Medicine. He began his research career as a Research Assistant in the Blood Products Research Laboratory at the Interregional Blood Transfusion CRS (Epalinges, Switzerland) from 2013 to 2014, where he contributed to research on platelet concentrate storage lesions and the impact of pathogen inactivation procedures.

Alessandro completed his master’s thesis at the University Hospitals of Geneva in the Translational Biomarker Group (Prof. JC Sanchez), focusing on blood-circulating microvesicles to identify early toxicity biomarkers in patients affected by paracetamol-induced liver toxicity (2015-2016).

In November 2016, Alessandro joined the research group of Prof. Lorenzo Alberio at CHUV - Lausanne University Hospital to pursue his PhD, investigating the processes involved in platelet procoagulant activity and its clinical significance. He received his PhD in Life Sciences from the University of Lausanne in May 2021.

Currently, Alessandro is working as a Laboratory Scientist and FAMH Candidate in Laboratory Medicine, specializing in hematology diagnostics, with a particular focus on hemostasis and platelet biology. His research is centered on studying intracellular signaling pathways and metabolomic activity underlying the formation of procoagulant COAT platelets.
