Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience

Headed by Prof. Micah Murray, the LINE (Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience) of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is one of the research groups of the Department of Radiology.

 

Our focus

The LINE is a multi-disciplinary facility originally founded in 2003 jointly by the Radiology Department and the Department of Clinical Neurosciences. Scientists of the LINE investigate the spatial and temporal brain dynamics of sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functions in healthy and clinical populations across the human lifespan from neonates to the elderly. Our research has helped establish a new schema of the functional organization of the human brain and how information from the different sensory epithelia is appropriately combined and/or segregated. These multisensory processes are what undergird our perceptions and what guide our actions. Multisensory processes directly shape perception and behaviour, affecting stimulus detection and attention as well as memory formation and retrieval. We have in turn used this knowledge to develop new screening tools in schoolchildren as well as the elderly and to implement new rehabilitation and sensory substitution devices.

Currently we strive to bring discoveries in the laboratory to applications in daily living. We achieve this via a range of psychophysical (e.g. behaviour, eye-tracking, and motion-tracking), computational modelling, and brain imaging/mapping methods (EEG and electrical neuroimaging, electrocorticography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and MRI modalities). One axis of our research focuses on the continued development of hardware and software solutions for non-invasive human neuroscience. We likewise achieve our mission by bridging between canonical laboratory-based research, immersive realities, as well as field research and applications. We also have a strong commitment to the training of students, researchers and clinicians in the use and application of these methods.
