Microstructure mapping lab

Headed by Prof. Ileana Jelescu, the Microstructure Mapping lab (MicMapLab) of University of Lausanne (UNIL) and Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is one of the research groups of the Department of Radiology.

Our focus

Our group aims to develop an in vivo microscope of brain structure and function, using diffusion and functional MRI. To this end, we work on the development and validation of new biophysical models of diffusion in tissues and of novel functional MRI contrasts, specific to neuronal activity. These tools are then applied towards understanding the interplay between microstructure and function in neurological and psychiatric diseases.

Our research topics span theoretical biophysical modeling, numerical simulations, experimental design and validation on both preclinical and clinical MRI scanners, and clinical translation to patient populations. While our focus is on the brain, the in vivo microscope is also suitable for the exploration of other organs. Thus, we serve as an expert platform on diffusion MRI for other research groups interested to use these methods.
