Conditions treated at the Department

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience treats numerous health problems linked to the brain, the spinal cord, or the nerves that innervate the muscles.

Depending on the type of illness that you suffer from, your diagnosis and its evolution, you will be treated by one of the Department’s Clinical Services.

There, a specialist multidisciplinary team will follow your progress from your first visit or admission right up to the end of your treatment, as well as during subsequent outpatient visits.

The main illnesses treated by the Service of Neurology are:

• Stroke
• Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders
• Multiple sclerosis and autoimmune disorders
• Epilepsy
• Headaches
• Peripheral nerve and muscle disorders
• Brain tumours
• Genetic illnesses
• Diseases that affect the memory and other intellectual functions
• Coma

This service performs surgical interventions to treat the following traumatic, tumoral, degenerative, vascular and congenital disorders:

• Brain tumours
• Chronic pain
• Epilepsy
• Craniocervical or cranial trauma
• Brain aneurysms
• Disorders of the craniocervical junction, for example congenital malformations, complex tumours or the results of trauma.

Neuropsychology takes on patients with brain injuries for diagnosis and treatment of cognitive and behavioural disorders.

Neurorehabilitation treats a wide range of patients, such as those who have been victims of craniocervial trauma, stroke, meningitis or encephalitis, a spinal cord injury, a myopathy, amputation or chronic pain.

The service cares for patients throughout the four main stages of rehabilitation:

• Early intervention during the acute care phase in other services
• Specific inpatient rehabilitation treatment (functional reeducation and multi-disciplinary rehabilitation)
• Interdisciplinary outpatient treatment
• Long-term outpatient follow-up treatments to ensure the patient’s optimal social and professional reintegration and the continued maintenance of the skills acquired during treatment.

The Leenaards Memory Centre - CHUV focuses on addressing disorders affecting memory and intellectual functions (language, reasoning, ability to make judgments, etc...).

The Centre deals primarily with Alzheimer's disease, which accounts for 50% of the cases seen. It also deals with memory disorders associated with Parkinson's disease, with cases of frontal dementia affecting younger people, or even vascular dementia, linked to the accumulation of small strokes in the brain.
