His research aims at understanding the structural and functional organization of the brain using advanced imaging methods such as diffusion and functional MRI. He has developed new techniques to map the connections between different brain regions and has used these methods to study brain development, brain disorders such as schizophrenia, autism and Alzheimer's disease. One of Hagmann's major contributions is the development of the "human connectome", a map of structural connections between different brain regions. More recently, his work has focused on developing methods for mapping electrical activity in the brain by combining brain connectivity using MRI with EEG. He is also working on the automatic detection of abnormalities in neuroradiological images using deep neural networks.
